Koh Lanta Activities
What to do in Koh Lanta
|
Koh Lanta offers a change of pace from the relentless touristy-ness
(is that a word?) of Phuket or Koh Samui. With barely enough
people to fill a medium-sized football stadium, the island
features activities that tend to revolve around its unspoiled
natural beauty and rustic village life. On land and at sea,
Koh Lanta is tropical Thailand at its finest, offering miles
of sandy beach without another soul in sight, lush tropical
forests teeming with life and authentic island villages where
friendly natives gladly share their simple way of life. |

Endless amounts of words have been written
about the fantastic diving and snorkelling available in the
Andaman Sea. However, it bears repeating that the underwater
world of this region of the globe is one of the most spectacular
you will find anywhere.
A kaleidoscope of corals and hordes of reef
fish mingle with otherworldly invertebrates, while manta rays
and whale sharks patrol the deep waters, feeding on plankton
and dreaming un-knowable dreams. |
Moo Koh Lanta National Park
Covering most of the southern tip of Koh Lanta
Yai, this large nature preserve is a mix of jungles, hills
and beaches. Tanod beach in particular is known as one of
the most idyllic places in the entire province. Even during
the peak of the tourist season you can relax on this beach
and not see another soul. There are plenty of trails to explore
as well as the old lighthouse, from which you can get an astounding
view of the azure seas which surround the island. |
Caving
Centuries of precipitation and flowing water
have etched extensice caves in the soft limestone of Koh Lanta.
An afternoon spent exploring these fascinating caverns is
a wonderful and adventurous experience. Guided tours are available
for 200 baht per person but be aware that caving is difficult
and strenuous and may not be suitable for everyone. If you're
healthy and game for an adventure you'll have a great time
worming your way through narrow passages, crossing deep chasms
and even swimming in a subterranean pool. |
Elephant Trekking
Koh Lanta is covered in lush green forests
laden with tropical birds, gorgeous plant life and stunning
vistas. What better way to enjoy this island paradise than
on the back of one of the most impressive animals on the face
of the earth? There are several companies that can arrange
a trek through the forest atop one of these fascinating creatures. |
Thai Massage
The laid-back lifestyle of Koh Lanta makes
it a perfect place to relax your mind and awaken your senses
with a traditional Thai massage. Although the high-end, stand-alone
spas have not yet made their way to the island, most of the
top resorts offer full spa and massage services. Many smaller
places are on hand, as well, where you can receive a delightful
massage at the hands of a skilled practitioner steeped in
generations of therapeutic knowledge. |
